About Rhône

The Rhône Valley wine region begins just south of Lyon right around the city of Vienne and ends in the south, near Aix-en-Provence. There are two distinct sub-regions; north and south. In the Northern Rhône, one finds granite and gneiss based soils, coupled with a continental climate. Here, Syrah is king of the cultivars, the only permitted red variety. Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier are allowed for whites. The wines of the Northern Rhône tend to be structured and firm, often with great aging potential.

The Southern Rhône sub-region announces a warmer, Mediterranean climate and the terroir is substantially varied. Here alluvium, sand, limestone, marls, pebbles, quarry stones and more are found. Grenache is the dominant red variety, but there is an incredible wealth of cultivars used for blending. The wines of the Southern Rhône are often aromatic and beautifully perfumed, with supple textures paired with intense weights.
